John Fedchock

Trombone

Sat, April 24, 8:00 PM

Attucks Theatre, Norfolk
$20, no discount

A Grammy-nominated arranger, this virtuosic trombonist has been on the New York scene for thirty years, receiving high acclaim for his takes on many facets of the jazz idiom, from his own soloing to his ability as a big band leader. "John Fedchock has his own trombone sound. Each note is measured and precise, flowing easily and deftly across the dense musical landscape like a small voice whispering in the wind. Unlike many of his contemporaries who choose to be more boisterous, their styles confrontational and in your face, Fedchock's phrasing is more elegant and sinuous, almost pianistic." (Pittsburgh Post-Gazzette)
Performance also features John Toomey, piano; Jimmy Masters, bass; Jae Sinnett, drums

Joe Magnarelli

Trumpet

Attucks Theatre, Norfolk

Joe Magnarelli started his career in jazz on a high note, landing recording dates with the likes of Lionel Hampton right out of school, and continued to soon thereafter become a semifinalist in the illustrious Thelonious Monk International Trumpet Competition. From there he went on to play with the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra, Harry Connick, Jr., and Grant Stewart, and since has expressed his abilities as a leader in five of his own records. "Magnarelli's assurance has become equal to his ideas, so be prepared for his hard bop swagger and strut—which is exactly as it should be" (Village Voice).
Performance also features John Toomey, piano; Chris Brydge, bass; Brian Jones, drums

Rich Perry

For years Rich Perry has fronted the tenor sax sects of two of the most praised jazz orchestras on the scene today—the Maria Schneider Orchestra and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra—both of which have been cited for multiple Grammy nominations and awards. Evidenced by Maria Schneider’s recent composition written for Perry alone, his distinctive sound has proven to be inspirational to both the audience and his band leaders alike.

Rene Marie

Vocal

Sat, May 15, 8:00 PM
Attucks Theatre, Norfolk

While past performances have influenced critics to laud her as being comparable to Ella Fitzgerald, Rene Marie has decidedly molded herself into her own vocal entity within the jazz universe. Expressing herself through her own unhinged ideas of musical expression, Marie is known to present aesthetic original works that "[cover] a number of musical bases, from the whimsical to the saucy and on to the profound" (Norman Provizer, Rocky Mountain News).
